With all the hoopla surrounding Daredevil #1, it seems like forever since I wrote a post about something from an older issue. However, since the topic of Matt briefly dating Maya “Echo” Lopez came up during an exchange on Twitter the other day, I was reminded of this old scene from Daredevil #11 (volume 2), by David Mack and Joe Quesada. Matt and potential client turned romantic interest Maya are on a date and decide to go to the movies. This is, of course, complicated by the fact that he’s blind and she’s deaf and they quickly get chased out of the movie theater when trying to fill in what the other is missing.

I think this scene is pretty cute (and hey, we even have Matt laughing in a post-Miller issue of ! ;)). I also think Maya/Echo had a lot of potential as a character, but has sadly been manhandled a bit over the years. Does anyone even know what she’s doing? The last I saw of her was in Secret Invasion.
To me, this arc – Parts of a Hole (yes, that is how you spell it) – was something of a mixed bag. I liked it for the most part but found some aspects of it a little odd. Such as the twins with the nervousness-induced speech impediment that only Matt could understand because he has superhearing (what?!). There were also a couple of cringeworthy moments involving Maya, such as her assertion that she can’t use a telephone (the TTY was invented in the 60’s…) or that she’s competed in the Special Olympics (the Deaflympics would have made more sense).
Oh well, other than that, it’s a pretty good story and features an interesting character study of the Kingpin. Oh, and that Miracle Ear commercial? I think this is the one Matt’s talking about, from 1988.
Maya’s currently in Bendis’ Moon Knight series as an undercover agent. I always did like her as a character and that movie date scene has always made me smile 🙂
Nothing Matt Murdock has ever done in his life is as evil or wrong as what he’s doing in this scene. Not cheating on Milla. Not letting himself get possessed and trying to kill his friends. Not treating Heather like dirt. Not throwing a baby off a roof. Nothing. There is a special place in hell for people who talk in movies like that 🙂
I like Maya. It seems like over the years Daredevil’s book has given life to a lot of characters that have, “gone on to better things.” I don’t know if it’s more or less than other Marvel books but it’s fun to think about.
I like Maya but never quite understood her role as Ronin in the New Avengers. I liked Parts of a Hole, especially the panel layouts and juxtaposition of different art styles, which together create a rather special quality that enhances the story.
Loved the next scene in this sequence, in which Matt is still laughing so hard, he loosens the stitches on his face, causing a tiny blood flow down his chin. When was the last time we saw Matt laugh THAT hard? 😉
Love Maya. Love that scene. Matt needs to laugh more. You’ve made my day with this.
