March 2010

Doesn’t it feel like forever having to wait for that April 14 issue of Daredevil? Well, I’m happy to tell you that there’s some awesome preview art out, along with a great and very enlightening interview with Daredevil co-writer Antony Johnston, courtesy of CBR. Johnston talks about what it’s like working with Diggle, how their collaboration came about and what’s on the horizon for Matt Murdock. He also gives us the skinny on his first solo Daredevil effort, the Daredevil: Luke Cage Match one-shot coming out in May. Enjoy!

Daredevil enters the shadows

by Christine on March 21, 2010 in Daredevil News

How’s that for an enigmatic entry title? News from a week ago (that I was too busy/lazy/distracted to post at the time) reveals that Antony Johnston will be staying on with Diggle for another arc spanning issues #508-512. The name of the arc is In the Shadows. Johnston himself offered this comment when revealing the news on his site: “I can’t say any more than that, but I’m pretty sure dedicated fans will like it… “. Ah yes, mysterious indeed.

This means that Johnston will be with us for most of the rest of the year considering that Daredevil #508 won’t hit the stands until July, most likely. I definitely liked what little we’ve seen of Johnston’s and Diggle’s cooperation thus far – with Daredevil #505 – so I think this is good news. I also hope this means the book will be able to ship on a monthly basis from now on. While I didn’t mention it in my previous post “Why are Daredevil sales going down?” it seems reasonable to assume that leaving readers hanging too long between issues isn’t great for boosting reader loyalty among casual fans.

So, between this and Shadowland (is it a bird, is it a plane, is it a big-ass dungeon?), 2010 looks like it’ll be the year Matt Murdock spends most of his time in the shade. To get some reader interaction going, how do you think this year’s worth of Daredevil related shenanigans will play into the fall-out of Dark Reign and the coming Heroic Age? And no, commenting on The Other Murdock Papers’ Facebook fan page – while appreciated – doesn’t count, so let us know right here what you think will be in store for Matt Murdock. ;)

See you next week with a review of Daredevil Redemption, and much more!

What’s this, you ask? Two phone-related wacky powers back to back? Why yes! Some of you may recall Wacky power #18 which saw Matt perform a physically impossible trick over the phone. It turns out that this is not the only piece of telephone magic Matt has stored up his sleeve. He can also tell when the phone is about to ring. And we’re talking seconds before it’s about to ring. Below is a scene from Daredevil #184, by Frank Miller.

Now, I seem to remember from my childhood, when everyone had those old-fashioned phones with a dial on them, that you could occasionally hear a buzz coming from the phone just before the ringing tone, but that would be in conjunction with the main signal, not seconds before it. Which begs the question of what exactly Matt is hearing here. Electrons moving through the wire? Hm, sounds pretty wacky to me. ;)

The wedding crashers

by Christine on March 16, 2010 in Commentary

It’s happened time and time again on this blog that I’ve had to stop and reflect on just what a jerk Matt can be sometimes. He’s constantly late, he’s a habitual liar, and he’s often rude to the point of seeming completely insensitive to other people’s feelings. So, yeah, Matt is usually the one I keep picking on.

The tables are turned a bit in Daredevil #189, in which Foggy Nelson and Natasha “Black Widow” Romanova conspire to break up Matt’s engagement to Heather Glenn.

Just like supposedly mortal comic book characters tend to die and refuse to stay dead, the same thing can apparently happen to supposedly immortal characters. This is the case for Kirigi, an enormous and powerful – though oddly quiet – ninja dating back to the introduction of the Hand.

After appearing at the very end of the last issue, Kirigi is introduced again below, in issue #175, in a scene which sees him killing three Hand ninjas with a single stroke. Their offense? Failing to kill Matt Murdock. I’ll tell you, if the punishment for slacking off at work was that severe at my office, I wouldn’t be writing this.
