The movie in question is a Disney Channel original movie called Going to the Mat (2004), about a blind teenager from New York who moves to a sleepy town in Utah and takes up wrestling to fit in at the new school. This is the typical kind of movie that comes on early on Sunday mornings, and that was when I happened to turn on the TV. Considering all the potential pitfalls of exploring the “teenager with disability” theme in a frickin’ Disney movie, this is actually a pretty decent flick, mainly because the main character doesn’t walk around being annoyingly super inspirational throughout the whole thing, but actually comes across as fairly three-dimensional. Who would have guessed?
Anyway, another Daredevil connection is that the associate producer of this movie is the same guy who was the blindness consultant for the Daredevil movie (Tom Sullivan), and the story is inspired by his own career as a blind wrestler. Since this movie was made a year after the Daredevil movie, I don’t think the Daredevil nod in this clip is a coincidence.
Anyway, before getting to the link to the the actual clip, I’d just like to say a friendly hello to the Disney people. Yes, this is copyright enfringement. It could also be argued that the clip in question is short enough to be considered fair use, especially since it is used for commentary purposes. However, if you want me to take it down, I will. No problem at all.
Anyway, here is the scene which takes place in the very beginning of the movie and shows the main character meeting his new neighbor and fellow underdog. And in case you’re wondering, both of these guys turn into great wrestlers by the end of the movie and the main character even gets the girl as well. This is, after all, a Disney movie…
